Chancel Arch

An arch which in many churches, marks the separation of the chancel or sanctuary from the nave or body of the church.

 

Chancel Furniture

Those furnishings typically used in worship during a church service which are placed in the chancel area typically consisting of a presider's chair, guest chairs, altar, flower stands and a pulpit and or lectern.

Chancel Rail

The railing or barrier in place of a chancel screen by which the chancel is separated from the nave.

 

Chancel Screen

A screen dividing the chancel from the nave.

Chapel

1.) A small area within a larger church containing an altar and intended primarily for private prayer. 2.) A room or building designed for religious purposes within the complex of a school, college or hospital or other institution. 3.) A small secondary church in a parish.

 

Chapel of Ease

A church built within the bounds of a parish for the attendance of those who cannot reach the parish church conveniently.

 

Chaptrel


A small capital of a vaulting shaft.

 

Chapter House

A place for business meetings of a religious or fraternal organization, occasionally also contains living quarters for members of such a group.

 

Chapel Royal

The chapel of a royal castle or palace.

Choir

The part of a church between the sanctuary and the nave reserved for singers and clergy.

 

Choir Aisle

An aisle parallel to and adjoining the choir.

 

Choir Chair

A chair designed for a member of the choir which typically has a pocket, either of wood or fabric on the back designed to hold sheet music or music books and which may be interlocking one chair to the next via a connection on each side.

Choir Loft

A balcony area reserved for a choir typically located in the rear of the nave.

Choir Rail

A rail separating the choir from the nave or the crossing.

 

Choir Riser


A platform consisting of a series of wide steps which allow a choir to sing upon them while still being seen by the audience.

Choir Screen


A screen wall, railing or partition of any type dividing the choir from the nave, aisles and crossings.

 

Choir Stall


A seat with arms and a high back often covered with a canopy for clergy and singers typically found in older Gothic or Colonial churches.

Choir Wall

A wall between piers and under an arcade screening the choir from the aisles.

Choultry

A rehearsal room in a church for a choir.

 

Chrismatory

A niche, or vessel which holds the consecrated oil for baptist.
