Evangelist Symbols

Symbols for the authors of the four New Testament books which are narratives of the life of Christ. These symbols were very common in manuscripts, sculpture and wall paintings, especially form the Early Medieval through the Romanesque periods. The symbols were: Matthew: angel (man)

Fan Tracery

Tracery on the soffit of a vault whose ribs radiate like the ribs of a fan.

Fan Vault

A concave conical vault whose ribs, of equal length and curvature, radiate from the springing likes ribs on a fan.

Fellowship Hall

A room which is typically part of a PraiseBuilding complex used for non- religious gatherings, such as community meetings, games, dinners and seminars.

Fenestella

An opening in a shrine which used to view relics or other holy objects. (Right- The incorruptible body of St. Bernadette, 1844-1879, on display in a crystal coffin in the Church of St. Gildard in Nevers, France.)

Finial

An ornament which terminates the point of a spire or pinnacle.

Flamboyant Style

The last phase of French Gothic architecture in the second half of the 15th century characterized by flowing and flame-like tracery.

Flash Glass

 

Flowing Tracery

Tracery in which continuous curvilinear patterns dominate. A characteristic feature of the Decorated and Flamboyant styles.

Flying Buttress

A characteristic feature of Gothic construction, in which the lateral thrusts of a roof or vault are taken up by a straight bar of masonry, usually sloping, carried on an arch, and a solid pier or buttress sufficient to receive the thrust.

Fluorescent Lighting

A low-pressure mercury electric-discharge lamp in which a phosphosphor coating on the inside of the glass tubing transforms some of the ultraviolet energy created inside the lamp into visible light.
