Cross-Church

A cruciform church; one having a crossshpaed floor plan.

 

Cross Vault

A vault formed by the intersection at right angles of two barrel vaults.

Crypt

A room, chamber or vault below floor level in a church, which may or may not be underground, usually used for the burials of dignitaries, such as leaders of the church.

A temple devoted to the worship of a divinity, as distinguished from a mortuary temple.

Cupola

A domical roof on a circular base often set on the ridge of a roof.

Cusp

A curved triangular-shape projection from the inner arch or circle.

Cupidation

A system of ornamentation consisting of or containing cusps.

In Buddhist architecture a monumental structure containing relics of Buddha or of some Buddhist saint.

Decastyle

In Persian and Indian architecture, a veranda or a more stately reception hall, moore or less open to the weather, with a roof carried on columns.

Decorated Style

The second of the three phases of English Gothic architecture from circa 1280 to after 1350 preceded by Early English and followed by the Perpendicular; characterized by rich decoration and tracery, multiple ribs and liernes and often ogee arches.

Delubrum

In ancient Roman architecture, a sanctuary or temple. The part of classical temple containing the altar or statue of the deity; the most sacred part of the temple.

 

Denticulated, Denticular

A molding that is ornamented with dentils. Dental molding is one of a band of small, square toothlike blocks forming part of the characteristic ornamentation of the Ionic, Corinthian, Doric, Colonial and Composite style of design.

The holy of Holies in the Temple at Jerusalem.

 

Dipteral

A classical temple having two rows of free columns rather than a single row.

Ditriglyph

An interval between two columns such as to admit two triglyphs in the entablature instead of one.
